נהוג לייחס ללאונרד כהן את המילים והלחן לשיר "הפרטיזן", שנכלל באלבומו Songs From a Room משנת 1969. אבל לפי הבלוג "Consequences of Sound", למרות שכהן בהחלט אחראי להישרדותו של השיר בתודעה הציבורית, הוא אינו אחראי לכתיבתו.

מי שכתב את מילות השיר היה עמנואל ד'אסטייה דה לה ויגרי, לוחם במסגרת תנועת ההתנגדות הצרפתית (הרזיסטנס), שהיה סופר ועיתונאי, והוא הולחן על ידי הזמרת אנה מארלי.

המאבק של תנועת ההתנגדות בכוחות הכיבוש הנאצי ובממשלת וישי הונצח בשני שירים היסטוריים ששרדו: "Chante des partisans" ו- "La complainte du partisan." כהן שמע את האחרון ברדיו ה- BBC הקנדי – אם כי בתרגום לאנגלית של היי זארט, שהתפרסם בזכות כתיבת “Unchained Melody” עבור ה-“Righteous Brothers”.

גרסתו של כהן מצמצמת את תוכנו ההיסטורי של השיר, אם כי הוא נותן כבוד גם לגרסה הצרפתית והשיר מושר למעשה פעמיים – פעם באנגלית ופעם בצרפתית. בעוד המילים באנגלית לא מזכירות את צרפת או את הכיבוש הנאצי, כאשר כהן חוזר לצרפתית המקורית, השורה הראשונה היא "Les Allemands etaient chez moi" / "הגרמנים היו אצלי בבית."

ובכל זאת, גרסתו של כהן היא בעלת מעגליות פוסט-מודרנית מעניינת: הנה שיר התנגדות על הלחימה בנאצים ששר יהודי צרפתי-קנדי באנגלית, כמעט שלושים שנה אחרי שהוא נכתב.
